Valentine's Day Weekend in Red Wing, MN - Part 1 of 2

For Valentine's Day, last weekend, Chris and I had booked a room at the Moondance Inn Bed & Breakfast, in Red Wing, here in MN. I found it at B&B Finder, when we were planning our wedding back in 2008. Suffices to say, we ended up getting married in Vegas but, 5 and half years later, we finally got to visit this place. This post is kind of long, so I'm breaking it down into 2 parts. This is Part 1 but you can read Part 2 here!

We arrived on Friday, right as the housekeeper was about to leave. Lindsey was nice enough to give us a call to let us know where the keys would be. When she found out we were just 5 min away, she waited for us, even though it was almost 1 h past her schedule.

We came in the side door and right away were taken by surprise by the exquisite high ceilings, dark and thick wood frames and copper wallpaper. Warm and inviting, with the fireplace burning and soft music playing, I knew I had made a great choice coming here. (They also serve appetizers and a nice bottle of wine, every Friday and Saturday evening.)

This is the only picture I grabbed with my camera, actually on the next day (that's why it's light out), but make sure you check them out online where you can see all the rooms and details. If you have a chance to go there, do it! It's amazing!

After we checked in and toured all the spaces, including a cozy game room in the attic, the nice breakfast area and the main staircase (which is also beautiful), we headed out for dinner.

We made reservations with the only restaurant that still had an open spot on V-Day, but we're so glad all the other places were booked, because what was our last resource, turned out to be the best.

The restaurant is somewhat new (I think a couple years old) and is actually located about 30 min from Red Wing, in Lake City. We went to Nosh Restaurant and the atmosphere, service and food - everything - was perfect. We had a great time - I definitely recommend it.

The next day, we woke up headed down for one of the most private and indulging breakfast services I have ever experienced - and it beats breakfast in bed. At 9 a.m. sharp, Chris and I were greeted by the owners, Chris and Mike, who offer this luxury to guests every Saturday and Sunday mornings. (Well, I had no idea that the breakfast was going to be this phenomenal, so I didn't have any cameras with me...)

The first course was a serving of a juicy and almost bitter grapefruit with a scoop of a caramel topping. It was surprisingly delicious. The second course was a french toast that was left soaking into something else over night and served with a ricotta cheese spread, topped with fine powder sugar and original maple syrup and two small chicken sausage links - YUM. And then, yes, dessert for breakfast: a white chocolate mousse topped with a black cherry glaze. It was, again, delicious... (forgive me if I don't have the right ingredients, I'm going off of the memory of my taste buds.) They also serve their own coffee blend, fresh juice, tea and water. I'm a total foodie and heaven felt really close.

As we are eating, this couple who was sharing this experience with us, announces they are celebrating their 45th anniversary. Sheldon and Ursula met in Germany: him, American and serving the Air Force at the time, and her, German and with a disapproving father. After breakfast was done, we stayed behind and talked to them for over an hour. Also learned more about Chris, the owner, who is a professor and has traveled to more places than I can recount. It was lovely to meet random and very nice strangers. It felt like we were friends.

We parted ways as it was time to head out and see the city. With a map in hand, we decided on which things to do. It was snowing with gusto, so we bundled up pretty nicely and went exploring.

Here's downtown Red Wing on a very snowy day:

We walked around, braving the cold wind and visiting the shops along the way. I was wearing nice and long leather boots, but they were no match for the piling snow we had to walk through. Lucky me, we found the Red Wing Shoes store, with the world's largest boot.

They also have a little museum upstairs.

Service was not great on the main level of the store, but the outlet store, downstairs, was awesome. I walked away treading in my new hiker & waterproof boots. Much more comfortable.

We stopped for lunch at the Subhouse and proceeded to the Pottery Place, which is a little mall area, inside an old brick building with restaurants and shops. The Pottery Museum is moving to just across the street from the Pottery Place, so they are currently closed. I think they'll open again in June. (We only came here because Sheldon, the Air Force man from breakfast, told us to. It was fun.)

At night, also by Sheldon's suggestions, we got tickets to see a very humorous comedy show at the Sheldon Theater, with Pat Hazel (one of the original writers for Seinfeld) and Karen Morgan (who is a former trial attorney - just imagine how many jokes she has!). The show was really good and the theater has a successful story of overcoming the changes in technology and the mass-produced culture we all consume. Worth checking it out.

For dinner, we went to The Brickhouse Pub & Grille, where the comedians sat exactly behind us. Unfortunately, we could not hear their conversation - we tried... :)

This was my first time in Red Wing. Have you been there? What did you do? What did you think? I would love to know - leave me a comment below!

This is the end of the Part 1 (Friday and Saturday). Check out Part 2 (Sunday) here.
